My name is Cathy Atkinson and I am a resident of Erin Ontario. My husband Jim and I moved up to the country to Erin October 5th 2011 from Mississauga. Health and fitness has always been a big part of my life, so when Jim and I made the decision to move, I needed to find a place to keep up with my exercise regime. My real estate agent referred me to Fit You. I started working out with Janet Hern one week after I moved in and I have been there 6 times a week since.

Fityou definitely has a better you in mind! Janet has a variety of equipment which makes each session with her different and fun. I don't worry about trying something new because she makes sure that I do the exercises correctly. Each time I attend her Kickboxing and TRX Bootcamp sessions, I know that I will have a great workout because Janet knows what I can do and she will push me to improve. I appreciate that she offers alternative exercises when needed. Since I started training with Janet, I have increased my upper and lower body strength and I have noticed more definition in my arms and shoulders. Fityou is a great fit for me!

When I started training with Janet, I was 17 lbs over weight and felt really negative about my body. I had never been out of shape before and it was really the first time I lacked the motivation to get back on track.
I didn't want to work out with others feeling this way and so I decided to look into personal training so that I could focus on myself and improving my personal fitness. I heard about Janet from a friend and thought I'd meet with her.
After just one session, I felt empowered! Janet was enthusiastic and gave me achievable challenges that boosted my confidence and a variety of training exercises that improved my overall strength and endurance. I saw results in my shape and my performance was better each work out.

Hi Janet,
When I decided I needed to seek help for my
weight, I was the heaviest I have ever been.
I have always been overweight but didn't realize
the impact of added weight on your system until
my Mom underwent a hip replacement operation.
That was my catalyst to make a change. I live
in Erin and finding a good place to workout close
to home was important to me. When I saw Janet's
website I figured, hey why not? Gyms have never
been successful for me. After meeting Janet I
knew she would make a difference. Her positive
attitude and gentle encouragement has kept me
coming back to her for personal training week
after week. I have been working out with her
for close to 6 months now and have no intention
of stopping!
Janet has helped me accomplish my dream of being
able to run 5K and still continues to amaze and
inspire me to greatness. At the fitness bootcamp
weekend on August 12, I rode a bike 6K after
10 years and conquered my boat fear I actually
Canoed AND Kayaked. She is an amazing person
who genuinely cares about you, your health, and
well being. If I hadn't met Janet I would not
be where I am today in regards to my fitness.

Hi Janet,
About running...
I signed up for Janet's Learn to Run clinic last fall. Although I love
sports, I'm not a "runner". I don't look like a runner, I'm
not a fast runner, and I didn't even have good running shoes! So I bought
some good shoes and followed Janet's philosophy that everyone can be
a runner. I didn't run much through the winter, but did keep active.
For me, running with the group is great motivation (we have appointments),
and makes it so much fun. I've ran in three races with the ladies we
run with so far, with the goal to complete it and beat my own time. I
ran my first full 8K the other night at 10-1 intervals and I'm aiming
for a 10K race this fall. So far so good!
About weight training...
Personal training with Janet is great. She always knows when you need
to be pushed a little more, and when to ease up a bit. She also keeps
the exercises varied and challenging, with lots of ideas on how to "torture" us
(in a good way!). Personally, I find weight training a challenge on
my own, but recognize the benefits of feeling stronger through all
aspects of my life. Training in the small group atmosphere is perfect
for me - it's a commitment, and a great mix of social time with working
out!

Hi Janet,
I am still high after the race
on Sunday and again thanks for everything. Please
thank your husband, Doug and kids as well. Your

Dear Marlene:
I always enjoy reading your articles
about the various people that live in our community.
In fact I must confess I am an avid fan of yours.
I always find your performances in the local
theatre terrific.
I wanted to suggest a person who
might be a candidate for your column and whom
I know you will enjoy meeting and chatting with.
Her name is Janet Hern and she runs (no pun intended)
Learn to Run Clinics here in town.
Janet offers two clinics, a 5km
and a 10km Learn to Run clinic. In whichever
clinic you choose, you run with Janet once a
week and commit to run twice a week on your own
following the schedule Janet gives you. Each
week Janet has a quick talk with the group and
gives you an informative handout. If you run
the three times per week you will be able to
run the distance at the end of your clinic.
At first glance you might think
oh another exercise option, but incredibly something
else happens to you when you start to be able
to run. Taking Janet’s clinic changed my
life profoundly. Now not only am I able to handle
stress with ease, I have more energy, and a renewed
self-confidence in myself that I didn't think
was possible. A bonus for me was without dieting
and by just following my running schedule in
eight weeks I was able to shed twelve pounds
and many inches.
To be honest, the first few weeks
were a struggle and often my body was asking
my brain what was I thinking. But somewhere along
the way I discovered myself and soon found I
was not only enjoying the running but looking
forward to my next run.
Janet’s encouragement and
advice have enabled me to give myself a tremendous
gift. I cannot say enough wonderful things about
Janet and think she is one of our community's
best kept secrets well worth revealing.
This is the end of my letter, but
not the end of my running. My eight-week clinic
ended on a fantastic note. Janet had encouraged
our group to enter in a five kilometre race in
Waterloo. Crossing the finish line while hearing
my children cheer for me will always be one of
my favourite moments in my life. I am going to
maintain my distance over the winter and will
be back in the spring for Janet’s 10-km
clinic.
I hope you are able to meet and
chat with Janet and allow others the possibility
of discovering the benefits of running.

I am a runner. I am a motivated
person. I love running, I love exercise and I
love feeling good about myself. And, running
and working out makes me feel great! I did not
need personal training to convince me of that.
What I did need was a little push to do better! Runners can so easily
get stuck in a rut of not wanting to be better. I mean, we are not elite
athletes (most of us!) so sometimes you can easily hit a plateau, and
think that what you are doing is all you can do. Well, that leads to
boredom!
Janet helped me understand that by running more efficiently, by building
strength, by toning up some parts of my body, I could run faster, healthier
and, ironically, spend less time doing it. Before going to Janet, I ran
four times a week and ran the same distance and speed each time. Janet
totally changed my workout. I started running hills. I started to try
speed work that would make me faster. I began doing interval training.
Janet taught me how to incorporate a variety of workouts into my week.
This variety made me a stronger runner in just one month (as long as
I keep it up!). I could feel the difference in my running. I felt stronger
and faster. I felt strong when I would climb those hills at a faster
pace than the week before. I felt better because I was toning up parts
of my body that annoyed me. Incorporating strength training (weights)
a few times into my workouts each week made me not only a stronger overall
person, but a stronger runner.
I took five whole minutes off my
personal best half-marathon time in just a few
weeks of personal training. I had run less, felt
better, was a faster and stronger runner. It
just takes some care and attention, expertise,
enthusiasm and motivation. I think I was stuck
in a rut with my running. By learning from Janet,
I am definitely out of that rut. I have always
loved running, but in the past two months I love
running more than ever. Every run during my week
is different than the last. I am building muscle
and toning my body, but not 'bulking' up. I am
feeling more energetic because I am running and
working out more efficiently.
